Midlands Ultra Sprint Win

I always enjoy racing the Midland Ultra Sprint event up at Midmar Dam. It’s a challenging course and I could push my body and get it ready for a very hard race coming up in two week’s time, the World U/23 Championships in Auckland.

Once again I didn’t rest and had it as a training race. The weather was very nice for racing, cool with cloud cover and no wind. I never had a good warm up as it was a 7am start and had an hour drive to the race from Durban. Everything was one big rush!

When the race got underway and I sprinted away. I got a good lead almost a minute out of the swim. I jumped on my bike and pushed myself for 12km until the turn around and rolled back as hard as I could while conserving some energy for the run. I came into T2 with about a 2-2.30 minute lead. I ran out as if it was the race in two week’s time, and it felt as if I was sprinting. I kept this up for the entire 5km to see what form I’m in and see what my body can handle come race day. I finished 4 minutes ahead of 2nd place in a time of 1.03.20 to win the race.

Thanks B Active for the well-organized event as well as to my support team – FINIS, FutureLife, Cytomax and to my family and girlfriend.

It’s a good confident boost to win a race and see that I am in the best form I’ve ever been in. I look forward to travelling to Auckland early Thursday and race next week Saturday. I will keep you guys posted on how things go.
