2013 Troutbeck Africa Cup

Looking back on my last race of the 2013 season, I feel nothing but gratitude.

Defending my 2012 title was amazing and the organization from Triathlon Zimbabwe was absolutely spectacular.

The ITU African Cup was staged in the beautiful mountains of Troutbeck in Zimbabwe at about 2000m. It has the same majestic feel as the Drakensberg.

Although there weren’t a lot of Elite athletes competing, there were hundreds of juniors, age groupers and open water swimmers taking part in the different events of the day.

I feel humbled by all the support received from the sidelines by the great turnout of spectators.

I am very happy to end off my season with 2 victories. It was great to come back and defend my title and of course being treated like a royal by the Zimbabwean federation. I went out and raced my own race, taking the swim out at my own pace, biking at a level I could maintain and running until I finish.

The course is hands down one of the toughest I have raced on, I would estimate that about 5% – 10% of the entire course is flat, the rest is either uphill or downhill. As a Durbanite living right next to the sea, racing at 2000m is also quite challenging.

I would like to congratulate my fellow countryman, Travis Johnston, for a good 2nd place and also for breaking into the Top 100 on the World Rankings.

I would like to thank my sponsors: FINIS, HUUB Design, Cytomax, Puma and Classic Eyes Gateway for their support during this year.

I would also like to thank SASCOC and the National Lottery for making this trip possible.

I am taking a well deserved break now and then I will get back into the hard training again to make sure that I am in good shape for the new season
